‘I have nnhoitg against gay people, as long as they are not explicit about it’ is as bad and as homophobic as ‘I have nnhoitg against gay people, as long as they’re not harassing me’.To know whether a seemingly innocent statement about gay peole, disguised under the form of tolerance, is in fact homophobic, it often suffices to replace the word ‘gay’ with ‘heterosexual’. Did you ever hear anyone say ‘I have nnhoitg against heterosexuals, as long as they’re not exagerating it’? It is my favorite reply to the above statement, because damn, I hate those look-at-me-being-all-manly-and-straight-ha-ha-ha-heterosexuals (this coming from a heterosexual female). To be truly tolerant towards someones sexuality, is to except him or her for what he is, whether this person defies stereotypes or not. Of course, it’s not so easy. We’ve come a long way. Many people do accept homosexuality, as long as these people do not flaunt it and behave appropriate. Others do accept homosexuality, as long as these people ‘are not afraid of who they are’ and behave according to every stereotype in the book, thereby confirming that they are very different from you and me. Both these stands are in my view completely inacceptable. But I guess it’s better than all-out gay-bashing, and I do know several gay men (not women) who have therefore embraced either one of these views and their thin veil of tolerance. Only yesterday I had a discussion with a gay friend who was not at all looking forward to the Gay Pride in Brussels this weekend – because the images on tv of ‘weird partypeople’ make it harder for young people to come out. Still long way to go…Sorry for the long reply!Eline recently posted..
